The Bund, Shanghai- 2/2023

The Bund is one of the famous landmarks of the city and is a must-visit while travelling in Shanghai.

The Bund also known as Waitan is a protected, historical waterfront area in Shanghai. Stretching approximately a mile long from Waibaidu Bridge in the north to Jinling East Road in the south, at the intersection of Huangpu River and Suzhou River, the Bund is the epitome of semi-colonial Shanghai for about a century.  The area has a significant European influence, with many buildings built in Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical, Romanesque, Art Deco, and Renaissance style that are now historic buildings.  From the 1863 to the 1930s, it was the rich and powerful center of the foreign establishment in Shanghai, operating as a legally protected treaty port.

We are now headed to the Bund.

The "Bund" is an Anglo-Indian word for embankment of a muddy waterfront.  It was brought by the

British from India.  The Bund was originally the towpath for dragging barges of rice on Huangpu River in Shanghai

To get to the Bund you have to go through East Nanjing Road which is the main shopping district of Shanghai.  It is one of the world busiest shopping streets

East Nanjing road is one of the world busiest shopping streets along with 5th Avenue and the Champs Elysees.

It looks empty here because China just opened their door during the pandemic.  I think this is the 2nd or 3rd week that China finally let their people out on the street and I people are still cautious.

It was a cold and rainy day but that does not stop us to walk around the area.

We are now at the Bund.  The Bund is known for being the home to 52 historical Western style building which date from the late 19th to 20th centuries.

Foggy on a cold winter day.

Across the street is the Bund promenade.
