Yu Garden, Shanghai- 2/19/2023

Known by lots of different names such as the Yu Garden, Yu Yuan, Yuyuan Bazaar, Nanshi, and Old Town, the area that surrounds Shanghai's most famous classical garden is Shanghai's main tourists spot.  The garden itself, Yu Yuan  "yoo yooahn," which literally means Yu Garden) is in the center of Nanshi , the traditional name for the old Chinese part of town. Chinese cities were traditionally walled, but the Nanshi walls, which date back to the 16th century, were torn down in 1912

The garden is located inside the Yu Bazaar, so you will have to pass through the shops and food stalls to access the garden.  Behind me is the entrance gate into Yu Bazaar or Yu Market.

Yu Bazaar is also known as Yuyuan Market and is outside the Yu Garden

A very traditional Chinese gate

Entering the Yuyan Bazaar area where there a lot of stores.

The street is decorated with colorful paper lamps.

Beautiful Chinese architecture and design in this area.

You definitely feel that you are in China with all the red lamps along the street.

People come here for the food and also to shop for jewelry, silk, antiques, arts, crafts, souvenirs.

It was a cold day but that did not stop people to walk around.

All the buildings in the old town are traditionally built.

Entering the old town

Colorful Chinese architecture.

Yuyuan Market nowadays becomes a bustling marketplace teeming with various shops selling diversified traditional specialties, inclusive of silk fans, jewelry, antiques, handicrafts, snacks, etc...

This is like a few weeks before China open their doors after Covid and people are happy to be outdoor.

Colorful paper lamps hanging between 2 buildings.

Nine Bend Bridge and Pond

This area is a bustling area where people stop by to admire the pond..

I was told at night time it is magical when the lights are turned on.

There are a lot of people working on putting up all the decorations for a lantern show at night.

NEXT...Yu garden
