Esperpento restaurant in San Francisco -4/18/10

Because we have a large group and we wanted everyone to sample at least a bite of each plate, we had to order at least 4 plates of the same dish. Some of the dishes are pretty good and some did not fare as well but overall we had a good dinning experience!  The food was still hot when it was brought, our waitress was attentive to our need and she did a wonderful job.

We start out the evening with Sangria just to put us at ease and to transport us to Spain to sample all the tapas...

The sangria was good but not extraordinary great but good enough.  I wish it was a bit colder but still worth ordering!

Fresh white marinated anchovies are called boquerones or gavros.  These little morsels are pretty trendy and popular right now.  The anchovies are sweet, firm, a bit tart and does not taste even remotely like the brown anchovies you get from the can.  Boquerones are simply delicious.  I should try to make them once of these days!

The food are being served!  Overview of our table when the food was brought out.

Patatas Bravas - Spicy potatoes.

Calamares Fritos - Fried Calamari.

This is a basic dish that adults and kids can enjoy!

Chorizo Salteado Cantimpalitos - Sautéed Spanish sausage.

Chorizo are so tasty and I just love them!

Tortilla de Patata - Potato and onion omelet.

This is one of the most popular Spanish tapas.  Very simple dish but very tasty.

Ostras Salteadas - Sautéed oysters

Another great dish!  Too bad we did not order enough for a second helping!

Another potato dish.. It is good but potatoes are not my favorite thing to eat but never the less there was not one morsel left when we were done with this dish.

Calamares a la plancha - Grilled Calamari

An excellent dish!  Very tasty, the calamari were grilled perfectly, the flesh was fresh and sweet.  I was so good that we ordered an extra couple plates.

Gambas Al Ajillo - Garlic Shrimp

This dish was just okay.  Huyen's version is a lot tastier and more appealing.

Grilled Quail on a bed of rosemary potatoes.   Picture was taken after we help ourselves.

I think we ordered a lot of seafood so Quail was the 1st protein dish we got and everyone wanted a piece of it.

Rabo Toro - Ox-Tail Stew

The Ox- tail was tender and fell off the bone and had an excellent flavor!

Alcachofas a la plancha -Thin sliced artichokes grilled with garlic & parsley.

Paella De Mariscos - Seafood with calamari, shrimp, Clams and mussels.

The paella was pretty good but by the time they served it we were almost full.  If this dish was served earlier we probably would polish the whole thing.

I took some of the leftovers home when I re-cooked the rice in a pan, I left it a bit longer on the stove so that the rice became crispier than it was served at the restaurant and the result was pretty good.

Close look at the Paella.

For Dessert I ordered the arroz con leche - Rice pudding.

Everyone seems to like it but I just did not care for the cinnamon they sprinkled on top but the rice was pretty good

Catalan Crema - Flan caramel

Excellent!  We ordered 6 flans for the group and that was not enough.  The flan was delicious and we probably could eat one whole flan per person.
