Taormina- Historic Center -09/25/2017

Taormina/Greek theater History center/Dinner

We are now getting out of the Greek theater and heading toward Historic center.

The Grand Hotel Timeo (the nicest hotel in Taormina), located just at the entrance of the Greek theater and was the first hotel to be built in the city with a view across the coast towards Mount Etna and beyond.

This is their courtyard.

Side view of the courtyard.

Corso Umberto is the main street in the historic center with lots of little shops.

View from the historic center with a beautiful mountain side in the background.

Chiesa (church) Santa Caterina, located on Piazza Santa Caterina was consecrated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, it may have been built in the mid-17th century. It sits on a piazza that abuts the highest point of the town's main street, Corso Umberto I.

Small street leading to apartments.

Lots of cute small streets.

Church of St. Joseph on the IX April Square (main Square).  Check out the back drop of the church!  Really amazing view.

Dinner

We are dining at Trattoria da Nino tonight located within walking distance from the historic center.

Trattoria da Nino, known by locals for its genuine Sicilian fare for three  generations, was established over 50 years ago by the Nicita family of Taormina and it is recommended by a lot of guide books.

In addition to the dining room, the restaurant  has a splendid panoramic terrace, providing a view of the northern Sicilian Coast and the west Coast of Calabria.

We opted to eat in the dinning room as it is getting a big chilly at night.

Minh and Hoa are starting the meal with a round of cocktail.

We got to the restaurant around 7ish and there are barely anybody there.

People do not usually start dinner until 7:30Pm at the earliest but usually they show up around 8:00PM

View of the dinning room/bar from our table.

The pasta is really amazing.  The pasta was cooked al dente and the sauce was so delicious.

Cream pudding similar to panna cotta.

Ending the meal with some limoncello for Hoa and Minh

and coffee for me and Loan.

After the meal was over we had to go walk back to the historic center to pick up our car and drive back to Catania.

The IX April Square (main square) is a really nice square situated on the Corso Umberto and there are always a lot people hanging around there.

The main characteristic feature of the plaza is its black-and-white paving. The square is built in the form of a huge terrace from where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Ionian sea and Mount Etna.

The main monuments that stand on the square are St. Augustine’s Church and the Church of St. Joseph.

Lined with cafés, the Piazza IX Aprile is a great place to stop by for a cup of coffee and to enjoy the unique ambiance of Taormina.
