The Last Days

Saigon- Discovering the city!

The Opera house

Built by the French and intended as an opera house but in 1955 it became South Vietnam's National Assembly building.  It is now restored to it's glory days,  it is a three-story theater, has an auditorium with 1800 seats, and with modern light and sound equipment.   A variety of concerts are now held in the Opera house such as such classical music concerts, ballet, opera, and Vietnamese traditional dance.

The caryatids, are sculpture of female figure serving as an architectural support taking the place of a column or a pillar supporting on her head are definitely influenced by the Greek.

The large central arch,  the applied ornament, balustrades, cartouches, and roof are particularly French.

On top of the arch is a decorative ornament relating to music.

People's Committee Building

People's Committee Building is such a handsome building, formerly known as Hotel de Ville (City Hall). The building has a well groomed garden and elegant interior. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public and can only be photographed from the outside only.   They said it is the most photographed building in Vietnam. The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee now use this building. A giant statue of Ho Chi Minh is smacked right in the middle of the square.

Manicured garden.  The building is in a French colonial style.

Built from 1902 to 1908 by who else but the French. The French colonists really left their imprint in Vietnam.  All the old buildings  they left behind are just gorgeous.  Great architecture!

The first Louis Vuitton store in Saigon

The first Louis Vuitton store in Saigon on Le Loi Avenue.

We all went in to check out the price and it turns out it is more expensive in Vietnam than in the U.S.
