Gifts exchange

After dinner I gather everyone in the living room so we can start playing the white elephant gift exchange.  White elephant gift exchange is a very popular holiday party game! Generally, white elephant parties need a minimum of six participants.  Our group is 25 people so it is large enough to be really entertaining because it is so much fun to steal gifts that are popular and sought after.  The rules are: gifts have to be between $15 to $25 - gifts can be stolen up to 3 times, meaning the 3rd owner is the final owner. This cycle of stealing can sometimes continue for a long time, until a new gift is chosen, at which point the turn is passed to the participant with the next number from the drawing.  Since items can be stolen, the item in your possession is not yours until the game is over or you are the 3rd owner.  Basically, the goal of a white elephant party is usually entertainment rather than gaining a nice gift.

First all the participants have to draw a number in a bowl ( I have to do this in advance) to determine their order.   Justin happened to draw the 1st number so he is the first one to choose a gift.

The first gift that was opened was a tea set!  Applause from Lea and big laugh from Spencer.

Tuan opening the gift he has chosen...

It is putting green....

Hanh handing out ribbons to Doan!

Kevin Vu opening his gift!

I am not sure what he got but people keep steeling his gifts so he had to open at least 4 new gifts.

The kids looking over to see people opening their gift.

Kevin's turn to pick a gift!

Kevin opening his gift.  It was a Nerf gun, the only toy in all the wrapped gifts.  Khoi was eying the toy the whole evening and hoping to steal it when he gets his turn.  In the end, Khoi got his wish and ended with the toy but in between Kevin had a chance to steal the gift back from Khoi but we told him not do it because you can hear Khoi saying out loud: "No, please do steal my gift".  It was so cute!

Ludo opening his gift.  He got a box of cookies, a $20 gift certificate from Jamba Juice and a plush Santa Claus. In the end of the game Phuc ended owning this gift.

Justin opening his gift!

Khanh and Dung got a box full of tennis ball.  The gift ended up in Maily's hands after the end of the game.

Khanh opening an envelope... I think it was 2 movie tickets.

I stole the movie tickets from Khang so he had to open another gift and got a crystal vase that was stolen by Tiffany....

Nicky opened his gift and laugh so hard when he saw it was a cake stand...

Tiffany deciding either to open a new gift or stole an open gift from someone...

The kids just having fun..

This is the end of the game!  We had so much fun exchanging and stealing the gifts.  The best quote of he evening belongs to Jason:

After opening his gift Jason said out loud: " this is EXACTLY WHAT I NEED!

 - A FONDUE SET!"

This is the first time the group played this game and we ended up with lots of gifts for the home which the kids has not interest in but most of them tend to pick large box and most of the large box are kitchen item... Next year we will definitely make the kids pick a gift themselves instead of us buying the gifts.
