La Foret Tasting Menu

After looking at the menu the four of us decided to go with the 6 course tasting Menu - $89/person.

Amuse bouche

The amuse bouche came out and it was a toasted piece of bread with salmon gravalax , red onion, caper and with a cream sauce.

The first bite was not great!  The bread was toasted too early and was probably sitting too long in the kitchen and by the time it reached our table the bread was soggy!

Course 1: SCALLOPS over puff pastry with saffron, cream cheese

The scallop with puff pastry is such a classic and old fashion way of serving French Food.  This dish was in style maybe 30 years ago.

The scallop was cooked properly and the sauce is okay.

I did not know at the time but this is the only dish that was enjoyable and then it went down hill from here!

Course 2:TORTELLINI aged garlic, cream & porcini mushrooms

I did not care for this dish at all!

The tortellini was very doughy and to tell you the truth I can't even remember how the sauce tasted but it was so and not memorable at all.

Course 3:AHI TUNA lightly peppered and grilled, served in horseradish and thyme sauce

The first bite of Tuna Hoa took he said right away that it has a very weird after taste and left his tongue with a very weird sensation.

I took a couple bites and decided to give Hoa the remaining of my Tuna.

Hala took a bite and decided that the Tuna has a funny taste and gave her plate to Mo! Mo has a good appetite so he ate double portion!

Course 4:QUAIL roasted with huckleberry sauce

What the heck is going on... the huckleberry sauce was way too sweet for a savory dish and totally killed the whole dish.

I ate just a portion of the quail and I tried to remove the sauce as much as I could but it simply was not good!

Course 5:Tournedos of Beef Chanterelle, golden chanterelle, herbs, ginger & brandy

This is a French classic and the meat was cooked medium rare- I like rare but this is totally acceptable.  The sauce was decent but again I told Hoa that meat also has a weird after taste!
We all agreed that they probably did not clean their grill properly and that's why other flavors are mixing with what ever food they are cooking on top.

Course 6: Souffé Grand Marnier

The soufflé and creme Anglaise does look very nice!  Before I took a bite of the soufflé I was telling Hala they must have a secret because the soufflé is not deflating at all.

And then I took a bite of the soufflé and realized they were cheating!  This is not a soufflé technically it is a baked meringue.  What they did is they beat up egg whites an sugar until stiff and then when ready to serve they just put it in the oven so that the top is brown. This dessert should be called Oeuf a la neige (egg in snow) but the only difference is that they baked the egg white.  An Oeuf a la neige would be totally white.

Course 6 -(2nd option): Ice Cream Creme Brûlée & Berries

I actually like this dessert a lot!  Pretty cleaver I must say.  They put ice cream inside the chocolate cup and put a layer of Crème brûlée on top, a layer of brown sugar and caramelized it and served it with a mixture of fresh berries.  Very Yummy!

After the meal we all looked at each other and nod in unison that we had a pretty lousy meal but I at least their saving grace is that have the service was excellent.  And as we walked out, totally disappointed about the food, I could not help but think to myself why would people come back to eat here?

French food is all about the sauce and La Forêt failed miserable, there is not a sauce that was even acceptable or above average.  La Forêt wanted to serve classic French Food but in order to serve a good French classic dish the kitchen has to execute each and single dish to perfection and unfortunately they could not come even close.

And then to add insult to injury we all got sick with the exception of Hala who only ate a  very small piece of Tuna and was spare of any discomfort.  Paying a fortune, getting a lousy meal, and getting sick, that is simply not cool!

After a meal like this it makes total sense now that I could not remember a thing about our dinning experience here 15 years ago.  I think you would also want to forget it too!
Needless to say we will never ever be back again!

Farewell my friend, we came and permanently left the building!
