Day 3 - Staten Island Ferry - 9/10/13

Staten Island Ferry terminal is really close to the 911 memorial and it only took us about 10 to 15 minutes to walk there.

Since 1906, the Staten Island Ferry has been transporting commuters, sightseers, and visitors between Staten Island and Manhattan. Passing by the Statue of Liberty and Governors Island, the 25-minute FREE trip provides riders with postcard-perfect views of New York City’s greatest landmarks.

Every day, over 65,000 people ride the Staten Island Ferry, and each year more than 1.5 million tourists take the trip, making the Ferry the third most visited attraction in New York City. A fleet of eight boats makes the rounds every day, rain or shine, so there’s always a boat ready to take you across the Harbor. From the St. George Ferry Terminal, it is easy to connect to buses, trains, and taxis.

The Ferry is FREE and runs all day, seven days a week Staten Island Ferry Schedule: Full schedule for the Staten Island Ferry as well as information on connecting trains and bus lines. For more Ferry information visit click here or call 311.

If you want to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island take the Staten Island Ferry which is a free ride across the Hudson River/NY Harbor.  The ferry goes pretty close to the Statue of Liberty and it is perfect to take pictures on a beautiful day.  Once on the ferry you get a great view of the Manhattan skyline, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty and Governor's Island and the best part it does not cost you dime.  Staten Island Ferry takes commuters across the New York Harbor and has long held the distinction as the single greatest free attraction on the Eastern Seaboard. Lots of tourists take the Staten Island ferry from the Manhattan terminal and once they reached the St. George terminal in Staten Island they must disembarked, reenter through the terminal building and  hop back on the next ferry to get back to New York.

Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal in lower Manhattan.

The Staten Island Ferry provides about 60,000 passengers a day with ferry service between St. George on Staten Island and Whitehall Street in lower Manhattan. The ferry is the only non-vehicular mode of transportation between Staten Island and Manhattan. The Staten Island Ferry is run by the City of New York to provide transportation from Staten Islanders to and from Manhattan.

The five-mile (8 km) journey takes about 25 minutes each way.  A round trip including waiting time is about an hour and trust me it is a very nice hour looking at the view of New York Harbor and it is so relaxing boat ride.

The Brooklyn bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the United States and was completed in 1883.

The bridge has a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and it was the longest suspension bridge in the world from its opening until 1903, and the first steel-wire suspension bridge.

The ferry has two levels, and plenty of seats inside but people usually forego the seats and try to grab a spot outside for better views.

It was a beautiful and warm day and it was really pleasant to stand on the deck and check out the view.

A few minutes after the ferry takes off you can have a view of the skyline of lower Manhattan.

Most of the people of the ferry were tourists and a lot of people were taking pictures..

New York Harbor is at the mouth of the Hudson River where it empties into New York Bay. It is one of the largest natural harbors in the world.

View of Ellis Island from the deck of the ferry.  In October 2012 Hurricane Sandy caused lot of damages and Ellis Island is now closed to the public and should re-open again in 2014.

Between 1892 and 1954 over 12 million immigrants disembarked from their boat to Ellis Island in order to pass immigration.

From the deck of the ferry you will have a perfect view of The Statue of Liberty.

More views of the statue of Liberty from the deck of the ferry.

After 25 minutes ride we are now reaching the St. George Terminal in Staten Island.

All passengers must disembarked,  reenter through the terminal building to catch the next ferry back to New York.
