Day 1- Old town

Bari is the capital of the Apuglia region located on the Adriatic sea.  We are wandering through the old town (Bari Vecchio) that was once plagued with petty crime but today it is transformed with a renewed focus on historical preservation and tourism.  The old town is fairly small and is sitting on a peninsula overlooking the harbor, partially walled and is full of a mazes of twisting alleys, and cobbled streets.

We are now entering the old town.

Arched doorways

The old town is well preserved as it was centuries ago.

Walking in the old town feels like going back in time.

Most of the residential buildings in the old town were mostly built in the 18th and 19th century.

Bari's old town was completely renovated in the early 2000 giving its houses a new lease on life with all the modern amenities.

By the 20th century the old town became a slum as there was no water supply system or sewer so people move out to the new area called Murat.

I think these block of stones are for people to tied their horses back in the days.

The old town is full of small cobbled stone road.

We love walking around as there are not a lot of people around.

The old town is very clean and well kept.

Balconies.

Old entry way and porch

It is very beautiful

Some of the street come to a dead end.

a large store in one of the square.

They even want people to take pictures and tag them on instagram.

Fresh and fry hot peppers.

Colorful pastas.

The fresh pastas look awsome.

Dry pastas.

Bundles of red peppers

Looks like they take the whole plant, hanged them upside down until they are sun dried.

Cathedral of San Sabino or known simply as the Cathedral of Bari was built over the original Byzantine church in the 12th-13th century and dedicated to San Sabino.

The front of the Basilica of Bari is plain with three parts set off by two pilasters.

Each Part has a portal.  The main portal is the center below a large rose window.

Inside there are 3 aisles separated by tow rows of eight columns

View of the main altar from the entrance of the basilica.

Closer view of the columns and arcades..

Portrait of San Sabino and on the right is a confession pew

The church was stripped of all the baroque decorations.

A white ciborium over the altar.

The rose window view from inside the cathedral.

The cathedral is in a example of Apulian Romanesque architecture.

Details on the columns.

This is the back of the Basilica is located in the Piazza dell'Odegitria.

You can see the bell tower in the back ground.  The bell tower is about 226 height.

NEXT... Old town continuation
