Matera Cathedral

We are now buying tickets to get inside the Cathedral. The tickets include the chapels, the museum and the cathedral.
It took 13 years to renovate the cathedral.

The cult of Our Lady of Constantinople, widespread in various Italian
places, dates back to a very distant time and place, namely the city
of Constantinople, the ancient capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Santa
Maria di Constantinople is the Virgin with the Child in her arms,
considered the protector of the city and of the whole Empire.

Straight ahead is the mysterious Cappella del Presepe with a 14th century nativity scene
The nativity scene was sculpted in stone
Chapel of the Annunciation dating back to the 16th century.
Coffered ceiling and niched wall that houses a statue of the virgin Mary and the Angel on the altar, flanked by Saint Roch and Catherine of Alexandria, and with a Pieta in the lunette above.
The main nave has tree naves with the central one rising above the others. The naves are separated by round arches supported by 10 columns surmounted by capitals.
