The old Town
The old town also known as the historic center of Monopoli is a picturesque tangle of narrow alleys full of shops, restaurants and bars. Like many other places in southern Italy, Monopoli was founded by the Greeks and you definitely feel like you are in Greece with all the whitewashed houses, the blue sky and the sun shinning above.
We walked from the old port to the church di San Salvatore. The outside is really beautiful with origins form the 4th century.
The church was closed so we could not get inside. The church has a mix of architectural style including Romanesque and Baroque elements.
The church is facing the sea because it was built by pirates who survived a shipwreck.
The bell tower.
The old town is full of narrow streets as you can see on the right picture a large truck has barely any room to make it through the street.
Whitewashed houses against the blue sky is so pretty.
Quaint street.
Another tiny church.
People out a lot of potted plants in front of their house.
It is so colorful and very cheerful.
Cobblestone small street.
I love the archways!
People drying their laundry al fresco.
I feel like we are in Greece with all the whitewashed houses.
Wall between the old port and the old town.
More archways.
This part of the old town was pretty deserted and we love it.
So pretty and so serene to walk around the old town.
We are now headed to the Monopoli Cathedral
