Day 6- Trani-9/21/2023
Cathedral of Trani
The cathedral began to rise in 1099 following the death and canonization of the young pilgrim Nicholas who landed in Trani from Greece and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas the pilgrim. The most important room for a Romanesque church is the crypt which was intended to house the relics of the patron saint of Trani, Saint Nicholas the pilgrim.
The crypt of the cathedral of Trani does not correspond to the etymology, it is not 'hidden' at all, it is bright and high, with crosses supported by elegant Greek marble columns,
Remains of frescos on the wall
Remain of Madonna and child fresco.
Entering the hall of church
Large gilded cross before the entrance of the Hall
The hall is set on two rows of low columns, which preserves the memory
of the ancient church of S. Maria only in its name and constitutes the
support of the upper church, dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption.
Lots of arched columns.
View of the exit from the Hall church.
Wooden crucifix
Rose window leading the light inside the cathedral.
This is the main transept but half was blocked for renovation.
Our tour of the inside is done and we are now leaving the cathedral.
View of the bell tower.
As you can see they are renovating part of the cathedral.
Side view of the cathedral.
