Day 2- Basilica de Santa Maria Maior (Sé de Lisboa) continuation-5/12/2022
We are now on the first floor on the right side of the Cathedral. The Cathedral has three aisles with a Romanesque transept.
We are going toward the central nave which behind these tall colonnades.

The center nave is in the far end.
The transept space still remain the original Romanesque vaults, but during the revivalist restoration of the 20th century archways were added at the extremities of the arms of the cross, as well as two stained glass window representing the patrons of Lisbon, Saint Vincent and Saint Anthony.
The central nave is taller than the sides and has a gallery of arcades. The central painting is depicting the Assumption of the Virgin in the chancel.

We are now going into the deambulatory and the radiant chapels, built in Gothic style.

We are now in the chapel of St. Cosmas and St. Damian with two magnificent Gothic tombs of the 14th century. They hold the remains of Lopo Fernandes Pacheco (on the left) and on the right is his second wife Maria Vilaloboas and two small polychrome wood carving of St. Cosmas and St. Damian, twin brothers of Arab origin who exercised free of charge medicine with the intention of spreading the Faith of Christ.
There are three outstanding Gothic tombs from the mid-14th century. This one tomb belongs to Lopo Fernandes Pacheco, 7th Lord of Ferreira de Aves, a nobleman at the service of King Afonso IV.

Book of Hours is Christian Devotional book used to pray the canonical hours. The use of a book of hours was especially popular in the Middle Ages and as a result, they are the most common type of surviving medieval illuminated manuscript.
The third tomb belongs to an unidentified royal princess.

Protected by a gilded wrought iron railing, the Baptistery has occupied the same place since the foundation of the Cathedral of Lisbon, although is was redone in the 17th century. Numerous illustrious personalities of Portuguese history were baptized.
The interior is covered with several tile panels representing scenes of the life of Chris and sacred allegories such as the Baptism of Christ, the Holy Trinity, the Purification, and the Sermon of St. Anthony to the Fish. Executed in the workshop of master P.M.P in the 18th century.
