Day  10- Non Nuoc Pagoda, Da Nang-12/30/2023

Nestled on the summit of Thuy Son mountain, Non Nuoc Pagoda is one of the most revered spiritual sites in Ninh Binh province. Surrounded by picturesque landscapes, this pagoda stands as a testament to Vietnam’s rich cultural and religious heritage. With its serene atmosphere and stunning natural backdrop, Non Nuoc Pagoda has become a must-visit destination for both spiritual seekers and nature enthusiasts.

The history of Non Nuoc Pagoda dates back centuries, with its origins shrouded in mystery and legend. According to local lore, the pagoda was established during the Dinh Dynasty (968–980 AD), a period known for its strong Buddhist influence in Vietnam. The name “Non Nuoc” means “Mountain and Water,” a fitting description of its majestic setting amidst limestone mountains and flowing rivers.

Xa Loi Tower was built from 1997 to 2004, measuring 92 ft. in height, and consisting of 7 floors and 6 sides.   It representing the seven steps the Buddha took after he was born (in Lumbini, southern Nepal). It has 6 sides, representing the Six perceptions (sight, hear, nose, tongue, body/touch, mind), the Six perfections (perfect charity, perfect observation of the percepts, perfect perseverance, perfect energy, perfect meditation, perfect wisdom), the Six supernatural powers (divine sight, divine hearing, knowledge of the minds of all beings, knowledge of all forms of previous existences of self and others, power to appear at will in any place and to have absolute freedom, insight into the ending of birth and death) or the Six tastes.

Inside the tower are 200 statues of Buddha, Bodhisattva, and Arhat.

One of the most impressive features of the pagoda’s exterior is a giant statue of Buddha sitting atop a lotus platform, which stands 33 ft. tall and weighs over 30 tons.
