Day  9- Hoi An-12/29/2023

Located approximately 30 km south of Da Nang, the serene beauty and ancient history of Hoi An Ancient Town in Quang Nam Province have made it a very popular destination.  The old Town in Hoi An, the city's historic district, is recognized by UNESCO as a well-preserved example of a Southeast Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century.

Visitors can admire the timeless charm of various centuries-old buildings. Hoi An Ancient Town is home to around 1,068 old houses, 19 pagodas, 43 shrines, 23 communal houses, 11 ancient wells, 38 ancestral halls, 44 tombs, and a historic bridge. They all reflect the traditional Vietnamese charm and also the cultural exchanges with both Eastern and Western countries in the past.

Intersection before entering Hoi An.

Hoi An is synonymous with lanterns, a unique symbol of the ancient town’s beauty. With over 400 years of tradition, Hoi An lanterns are crafted from bamboo frames wrapped in vibrant silk in vibrant colors like red, yellow, blue etc...

Banner at the entrance of Hoi An indication that it is a Unesco designation town.

A beautiful store with yellow lanterns in the front.

Street inside the old quarter.

Hoi An’s most common houses are one or two-story townhouses, characterized by narrow width and long depth, forming a tube-shaped structure.

Hoi An has many picturesque photo spots.

Alley in the old town.

Very pleasant to walk around in the evening along lantern-lit streets,

We are headed to Hoai River

Hoai River is a picturesque waterway that winds its way through the heart of Hoi An Ancient Town. A branch of the Thu Bon River, it holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike, symbolizing the timeless charm and rich heritage of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Hoai river flows through Hoi An and is an inseparable symbol of the ancient town. It is deeply intertwined with the lives of Hoi An residents, many of whom make their living by rowing boats and taking tourists on scenic tours.

A Hoi An boat ride cost around 50,000 VND ($2) for a 30-minute tour, and for larger groups, it is about 100,000 VND ($4).

The boats are non-motorized, letting you soak in the ancient, serene atmosphere of Hoi An.

Bridge linking the two shores of the river.

Panoramic view of the river and the old town on the shore.

Resting area not too far from the river.

At night time the old town is magical with all the colorful lanterns.

Lots of restaurants and coffee shops in the old quarter.

The iconic Hoi An yellow walls.

Hundreds of Hoi An’s old houses, either traditionally designed or influenced by Chinese or French architecture, are painted in vibrant shades of yellow, often complemented by green shutters and draped with bougainvillea. These yellow walls are not only charming, they also symbolize prosperity and good fortune, blending perfectly with the tropical climate to remain well-preserved for hundreds of years.

Colorful lanterns.

We did not have a reservation to Com Linh restaurant but once we got there they told us there will be an hour long wait.

People were waiting patiently to eat here but we decided to go just next door to Bep Nha as they have room for us..

Thuan and Hoa waiting for the restaurant to set up our table.  As you can see on the right, Com linh is a very popular place.

Inside Bep Nha restaurant.  We had Vietnamese food and it was pretty decent.

Restaurants along the way...

A cool coffee shop with people seating outside.

Lots of beautiful stores in the old quarter.

NEXT... Am Phu Cave
